Maison Castagne "Brute de Castagne"

Maison Castagné is a 6th generation family-run farm in the Côtes du Lot, located in Martel, which is to the north of Cahors in Southwest France. The Castagné family has been growing walnuts and other local crops in the region since the 19th century. The family estate even used to have grapevines planted, but they had long since been abandoned and mostly forgotten about in recent memory. Of course, there is a long winegrowing tradition in this region, and brothers Adrien and Romain had long held a dream to bring back grapes and winemaking to the family farm. After taking over the estate in 2017, they made this dream a reality by planting 3.5ha Malbec, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Chenin, Chardonnay, and Roussanne in and isolated plot next to the forest. These vines came into full production for the 2020 harvest. They have never seen chemicals, and the entire estate (grapes and non-grapes) has been certified organic through Ecocert since 2021.

Maison Castagne's Brute de Castagne is an elegant and refined sparkling wine from the historic region of Cahors in Southwest France, known for its rich winemaking tradition. This wine is made from 100% Chenin Blanc, a grape variety revered for its versatility and ability to produce wines with bright acidity, complex aromas, and a remarkable aging potential.

In the glass, this beautiful sparkler presents a pale golden hue with a fine and persistent mousse, hinting at the wine’s quality and craftsmanship. On the nose, you are greeted with a vibrant bouquet of green apples, citrus zest, and white flowers, accompanied by subtle notes of honey, almonds, and a touch of minerality. These aromas reflect the unique terroir of the Côtes du Lot, where the combination of limestone soils and a temperate climate allows Chenin Blanc to thrive.

On the palate, it is crisp and lively, with a refreshing acidity that balances beautifully with the wine's delicate fruit flavors. You'll find layers of ripe pear, quince, and lemon, intertwined with a hint of brioche and a stony minerality that adds depth and complexity. The finish is clean and long-lasting, leaving a lingering impression of citrus and a slight nuttiness.

This sparkling wine is a true expression of the Chenin Blanc grape, showcasing its ability to produce a wine that is both vibrant and sophisticated. Brute de Castagne is perfect as an aperitif, but it also pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes, including seafood, goat cheese, and light salads. Its versatility makes it an excellent choice for both casual gatherings and special occasions.
