Composition: This single malt is made from 100% malted barley, with a significant portion being heavily peated, contributing to its robust flavor profile.
Fermentation and Distillation: The whisky undergoes a 100-hour fermentation process in Mizunara oak washbacks, a type of Japanese oak known for imparting complex flavors. It is then distilled twice using traditional Forsyths copper pot stills.
Aging: Aged between 4 to 7 years, the whisky matures in a variety of cask types, including new Taransaud T5 French oak, Mizunara hogsheads, sherry casks, and chibidaru (modified hogsheads with approximately a 40-gallon capacity).
Flavor Profile: The nose presents aromas of orange peel, mint, loquat, and melon. On the palate, it offers a rich and softly sweet experience, leading to a nutty and herbal finish.
Limited Release: This edition is non-chill filtered, bottled at 53.5% ABV, and limited to 2,640 bottles, emphasizing its rarity and appeal to collectors.
Packaging: The 2023 release features a unique label depicting U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry enjoying a dram of Ichiro’s Malt in Washington D.C., surrounded by cherry blossom trees. This artwork pays homage to the historical connections between the United States and Japan, notably the cherry blossom trees gifted by former Tokyo Mayor Yukio Ozaki and chemist Dr. Jokichi Takamine in 1909.
