Winemaker Roberto Henríquez is doing really cool things in Chile: he’s helping revive one of South America’s most historic wine traditions. We met Roberto in 2019 and learned about his vision, his passion and saw his long, beautiful, perfect hair in person. Many of the vineyards in the Biobío Valley have been untouched by modern industrial farming, allowing remarkable parcels of century-old, dry-farmed vines to exist. This is extremely rare in the world of wine. 

He discovered his love of wine as a child working in his uncle’s vineyard, where he developed a deep connection to farming traditions and rural wine culture. Roberto trained in Burgundy and in 2015 he founded his own winery, dedicated to preserving historic vineyards of País (Mission) grapes. His wines celebrate Chile’s heritage, landscape, and community-driven agricultural traditions. Rather than replanting with international varieties, he works with old bush vines of grapes that have been rooted in Chile for generations, particularly Sémillon and Moscatel de Alejandría, often grown together in mixed old-vine parcels. The “Old Vines” Blanco comes from some of these heritage vineyards, where vines planted decades ago produce small yields of intensely flavorful fruit. Roberto’s dedication to Chilean winemaking has earned him numerous accolades, including the Chilean Wine Innovation Award and Best Winemaker of the Year, recognized by leading wine organizations.

Old Vines is a special white wine. It’s textured and energetic with aromas of citrus peel, orchard fruit, wild herbs, and a subtle saline minerality that shows off the region’s granitic soils and cool Pacific influence.
